The Italian Institute of Welding, founded in 1948 in Genova, is a founding member of two extremely important international organisations in the world of welding:
the European Welding Federation (EWF) and the International Institute of Welding (IIW).
They are, respectively, the umbrella organisations of 32 European national Institutes of welding and 59 National Institutes of welding of many countries worldwide.
These organisations play an essential role in processes to disseminate knowledge in the field of welding and related areas of expertise. Furthermore, they work towards the harmonisation of regulations and available personnel qualification schemes, for the personnel management procedures and systems that apply to the world of welded fabrication.
Within both organisations, IIS has always held top positions. It chairs or sits on a number of national and international committees and work groups for standardisation and research. This active participation of the Italian Institute of Welding in these organisations results in intense international activity that generates contacts and synergies with its counterparts in developed countries.
